Google Stadia

stadia.google.com | Shut down January 18, 2023

Cloud gaming from Google. The tech worked. The business did not.

What it did

Stadia streamed full console-quality games from Google data centres to browsers, phones and a dedicated controller, with no local hardware needed.

The facts, as reported

Google announced on September 29, 2022 that Stadia would shut down, refunded hardware and software purchases, and turned the service off on January 18, 2023.

  • Google Stadia (Wikipedia)

    reporting | 1/18/2023

"Stadia was announced for shutdown in September 2022 and the streaming service ended on January 18, 2023, with purchases refunded."

Marketur analysis, not fact

Stadia solved a technical problem nobody had ranked first. Players wanted games and a library they trusted would still exist next year, and Google's own shutdown history worked against it. Buying games on a platform that might vanish is a bet, and buyers priced that risk correctly.

What to take from it

  • Technical excellence does not beat a missing reason to switch.
  • A vendor's reputation for killing products is a real cost customers price in.
  • Content and catalogue beat infrastructure in consumer markets.
