Six second video, huge culture, no revenue model.

What it did

Vine let people record and loop six second videos in an app built for fast browsing. It produced its own generation of creators and formats.

The facts, as reported

Twitter announced in October 2016 that it would discontinue the Vine mobile app. Uploads were turned off in January 2017 and the site later became an archive before being taken down.

Marketur analysis, not fact

Vine had culture, creators and reach, and none of it was ever converted into money for creators or for Twitter. Competitors paid the same talent. When your best users can be bought away and you never built the economics to keep them, attention leaves faster than it arrived.

What to take from it

  • Attention is not a business model until someone is paid.
  • If your creators can be hired away by a competitor, they will be.
  • A parent company under pressure cuts the product that does not pay for itself.
