For years, using ChatGPT with WordPress usually meant keeping two tabs open.
You asked ChatGPT what to do, then switched back to WordPress and did the work yourself. Copy the text. Find the setting. Install the plugin. Change the menu. Check whether it worked.
That is useful, but it is not really ChatGPT managing WordPress.
That is changing.
Yes, ChatGPT can manage WordPress when it has the right connection
ChatGPT cannot simply reach into a random WordPress website. It needs a controlled way to discover what the site can do and permission to perform specific actions.
One way to build that connection is through MCP, the Model Context Protocol. WordPress has also been building the pieces needed for this kind of AI interaction. The WordPress Abilities API gives plugins and themes a standardized way to register functionality with defined inputs, outputs and permissions. The official WordPress MCP Adapter can expose those abilities so compatible AI agents can discover and execute them.

What does managing WordPress with AI actually mean?
The interesting part is not asking AI to generate another blog post. It is giving the assistant narrowly defined tools that work with the actual website.
Depending on the tools exposed by the WordPress connection, an assistant could inspect posts and pages, update content, manage SEO fields, work with menus, check plugins, inspect settings, manage memberships, analyze site data or run diagnostics.
The exact capabilities should depend on the site and the permissions you intentionally expose. An AI assistant should not automatically receive unrestricted administrator access just because you want it to update a page.

I can ask an AI assistant to inspect this WordPress site before making a change. It can use the tools exposed through Marketur MCP, make the requested change and then read the resulting state again to verify what happened.
That changes the workflow completely.
Instead of asking, “Where is the setting to change this?” I can increasingly ask, “Can you check this and change it for me?”
The difference is small in wording and huge in practice.
What can Marketur MCP let an AI assistant work with?
Marketur MCP is being built around controlled WordPress management rather than one giant unrestricted connection. The goal is not to remove every safety check. It is the opposite. Useful AI access needs boundaries, permissions, confirmations and verification.

Can ChatGPT install and configure WordPress plugins?
It can if the WordPress connection exposes those actions and the connected user has permission to perform them.
That distinction matters. ChatGPT itself does not magically gain access to the WordPress plugin system. The connector supplies specific tools. WordPress still controls what the authenticated user is allowed to do, and a well-designed connector can add additional restrictions on top.
This is one reason I think the future of AI and WordPress is more interesting than simply adding a chatbot inside wp-admin.
Can ChatGPT change memberships and other plugin settings?
Again, it depends on the tools available.
A generic WordPress connection may know nothing about the internal settings of a membership or affiliate plugin. A purpose-built integration can expose supported operations from those plugins as tools, ideally using their public APIs instead of making blind database changes.
That is where AI site management starts becoming genuinely useful. WordPress is an ecosystem. Managing the site means working with more than posts and pages.
Is giving ChatGPT access to WordPress safe?
It can be done responsibly, but the question should never be answered with a simple yes.
Security depends on authentication, permissions, which tools are exposed, what confirmation a destructive action requires and whether changes can be audited or reversed.

WordPress is becoming much more AI-ready
This direction is not limited to third-party experiments.
WordPress 6.9 introduced the Abilities API. WordPress 7.0 added an AI Client for plugin developers, and the official MCP Adapter provides a path for exposing WordPress abilities to AI agents. WordPress developers are now being shown how these pieces can work together in real AI-powered plugins.

That matters because WordPress does not have to become a closed AI website builder to benefit from the conversational interface those builders made popular.
The bigger shift is from instructions to actions
I still use AI for ideas, writing and troubleshooting. But I think the more important change is what happens when the assistant can safely interact with the software itself.
Instead of AI telling you how to manage WordPress, AI can increasingly help manage WordPress with you.
You keep WordPress. You keep your hosting. You keep your plugins and your data. The AI becomes another interface for working with the site.
That is the part I think is going to get very interesting.
