You do not have to send your audience to several outside platforms just to give members a place to interact. You can build a community directly into WordPress.

What does a WordPress community need?
A useful community needs more than a registration form. Members need reasons to return after creating an account.
For most communities I would start with member profiles, a social feed, replies, groups, notifications and messaging. Depending on the project, you may also want memberships, courses, downloads or other member resources.
Start with the membership structure
Before adding feeds and chat, decide how people join and what the membership experience should look like. A simple community might have one free level. A larger site could offer several membership options and additional resources.
WordPress has a large ecosystem of membership plugins, so the membership system can focus on accounts and subscriptions while the community layer focuses on interaction.
Add the social feed
The feed is where the site starts feeling like a community rather than a member directory.
Members should be able to see recent conversations, publish updates, reply to other people and discover discussions without navigating through a complicated forum structure.

Use groups to organize conversations
Once a community grows, one giant feed can become noisy. Groups let members organize around interests, projects, teams or topics.

Feed posts and direct conversations serve different purposes. A feed is great for discussions everyone can join. Chat is better when members want a faster conversation.

Think about mobile from the beginning
Communities are repeat-visit websites. People will often check them from a phone, so mobile usability matters.
A progressive web app can make a WordPress community feel closer to an installed application. Navigation, notifications and quick access become especially useful when members return regularly.

Keep the community with the rest of the website
One reason I like WordPress for communities is that the social experience does not have to live by itself.
The same site can publish articles, register members, host discussions and provide member resources. A visitor can discover an article through search, create an account and become part of the community without moving to a completely different platform.
Do you need one plugin that does everything?
I do not think so. I would rather use focused pieces that work together.
WordPress provides the foundation. A membership plugin handles accounts and subscriptions. A community plugin handles the social feed and groups. A chat plugin handles conversations. A PWA layer can improve the mobile experience.
That structure also gives you flexibility as the community grows.
Build the smallest useful community first
Do not start by trying to recreate every feature from a giant social network. Start with what gives your members a reason to return.
For many sites, that means accounts, a clean feed, groups and an easy way to communicate. Add more when the community actually needs it.
