Claude can help with WordPress without being connected to your website. You can paste code into a chat, ask for copy, troubleshoot an error or get instructions for a plugin.
But there is a major difference between Claude knowing about WordPress and Claude being connected to your WordPress site.
With a proper connection, Claude can discover tools exposed by the site and use them to inspect or manage real WordPress data within the permissions you allow.
The connection layer is the important part
Claude does not automatically know what is installed on your site, what your settings are or what changed five minutes ago.
To work with the real website, it needs a connection that turns supported WordPress functionality into tools Claude can call.
MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is designed for this kind of interaction. WordPress now has an official MCP Adapter that can expose WordPress Abilities as MCP tools for compatible AI clients.

What are WordPress Abilities?
The Abilities API was introduced in WordPress 6.9. It gives WordPress core, plugins and themes a standardized way to describe individual pieces of functionality with defined inputs, outputs and permission checks.
Think of an ability as something the site knows how to do. An MCP layer can make selected abilities discoverable to an AI agent.

What can Claude do after it is connected?
That depends entirely on the tools you expose.
A minimal connection might only let Claude read site information. A broader WordPress management connection could expose tools for posts, pages, SEO, menus, plugins, themes, memberships, analytics or other plugin-specific functionality.
The best setup is not necessarily the one with the most tools. It is the one that exposes the capabilities you actually need with appropriate permissions and safeguards.
Connecting Claude with Marketur MCP

Authentication still matters
MCP does not mean bypassing WordPress security.
The WordPress MCP Adapter documentation describes authenticated connections and notes that individual abilities can enforce their own permission checks. A connector can add its own controls as well.
The important principle is simple: the AI should only be able to perform actions the connection deliberately exposes and the authenticated user is permitted to perform.

Claude and WordPress are a useful combination
Claude is already useful for writing code, reasoning through WordPress problems and explaining technical issues. Connecting it to the actual site closes the gap between advice and action.
That is where things get interesting.
The assistant can gather evidence before suggesting a fix. It can work from the real state of the website. And when a supported change is made, it can verify the result instead of assuming the instructions worked.
